Visit 20 ha of picturesque farmland, exciting historical and natural discoveries around every corner.
The 1880 house which was the original farmhouse of the Prinsloo family has been kept in its original state. The house is surrounded by a traditional farmyard dating back to the same era. Once one walks through the farmyard gates you are taken back in time and can spend hours exploring the house and its historical contents, including a smoking room, living room, indoor and outdoor kitchens, boys room, bathrooms and a meat house for dairy and meat products which feature some of the original items belonging to the family as well as outdoor water pumps and a vegetable garden. The house has many unique items from the era such as a coffee bean roaster, cream makers, boereseep, mielieleaf matrasses on the beds, candle making molds and more.
Blacksmith Shop
The blacksmiths shop is a revelation of the skill of this occupation and how dependent the family was on the blacksmith for the rims of the wagon wheels, horseshoe making and branding of cattle.
Demonstrations
Demonstrations of coffee bean roasting and making coffee, candle making, goose feather plucking can be arranged by prior booking. A whip cracking demonstration and cattle branding as well as basic horse show making can also be pre-booked. For a more immersive experience into the lives of the people living in the late 1800s/early 1900s pre-bookings can be made to make clay oxen using local clay form the dam and roosterkoek braaiing. Baking bread in batches of 24 farm loaves can also be prebooked and enjoyed with local butter and jam made at the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum.
Filming & Photo Opportunities
The old farmyard was used for the film “Verraaiers”, “Tyd van waterpere”, and recently a follow up to “Verraaiers” by Afriforum media.
Below the old farmyard (northerly direction) is a beautiful peaceful dam which one can visit and often engage with the cattle or donkeys who graze around the dam.
The dam had black bass and other fish which have unfortunately been affected by the drought, but we hope to restock it once it is full again and fishing can also be pre-arranged.
Ideal for Weddings, Getaways and Functions
The museum is an ideal spot for weddings, business getaways, bachelor parties, baby showers, family occasions, filming and photography. At Lapa Kraal dormitory accommodation for 60 – 70 is available whilst a beautiful hall with kitchen or our large boma area will easily accommodate 80 – 100 guests, and those who find things to hot, have access to a swimming pool. Other areas which are popular for hire include the beautiful old farm restaurant which can seat 100 as well as the stoep area just outside.
Agricultural Museum
The transport and agricultural museum hosts carriages used by Paul Kruger as well as European hierarchy, funeral wagons, ox wagons, the famous spiders, goat carts and other forms of transport. There are a variety of ox wagons including traders’ wagons, nagmaal wagons and wagons used for general transport. Examples of the oxen and horses used to pull the wagons live on the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum farm and are very friendly to visitors.
The agricultural displays feature the history of agriculture from the San grind and mill stones, bows and arrows to the machinery and veterinary equipment used in the early and later1990s.
The museum has large sprawling grounds which are popular with scout and voortrekker groups as well as people wanting to camp.
Antique Tractors
The tractor hall boasts a McKlaren steam engine and Tractor (with Dresdner engine) dating back to the 1800s. Other unique exhibits are one of only three stock tractors manufactured worldwide, Caterpillar petrol and diesel driven crawler tractors and several well-known tractor brands such as John Deere, Ferguson, Lanz Bulldog dating back to the early 1970s. A guided tour will enhance the visitor experience.
The site is particularly popular with junior grade learners and their visit often includes rooterkoek and clay oxen making as well as a tractor tour. Ther is a designated picnic area which includes braai stands and tables which visitors are welcome to use.
Activities and Festivals
Activities on the farm include a Highveld veteran engine and tractor club who meet regularly to keep the tractors in running order and on occasion take the tractors out for a run.
The Mampoer Festival is held annually in early June to celebrate the culture of distilling Mampoer. The festival is a one-day event and offers several interesting exhibits and stalls to view as well as a packed program and entertainment for the whole family
Visitors are welcome to view an auction featuring a variety of goats, sheep, chickens and on occasion more exotic animals such as camels which occurs monthly, close to the 25th of each month or a car rally, usually early in the month. Equine enthusiasts may want to view or partake in the horse endurance races which are held quarterly.
